Spanish Business Quarter held its second meeting in Manchester

Following the success of the first meeting in Leeds a few weeks ago the Spanish Business Quarter held its second networking event at La Tasca in Manchester to stimulate Anglo-Spanish business and cultural relations the other side of the Pennines.

The event took place on Wednesday 23 April, coinciding with the celebration of St George's Day who is Patron Saint in England but also in many other countries, cities, such as Cáceres in Spain, and regions, including Cataluña (La Diada de Sant Jordi). Remarkably, it is also the date when both Cervantes and Shakespeare died in 1616.

Businesses leaders and professionals with direct relationships in Spanish or Spanish-speaking markets gathered on this special date to network, speak “Spanglish” and enjoy a great paella whilst forging new links and interests.

In the company of the Honorary Consuls of Spain in Manchester and Liverpool, representatives of a wide range of businesses attended the event, including the organizers of the Spanish Festival Manchester and companies in the world of fashion, translation, coaching, legal services, tourism, marketing and many more sectors.

Entrevistamos a Adela Burgos, co-fundadora de Contrapicado

¿Qué es Contrapicado y cómo nace?

Contrapicado somos 3 aficionados al cine que hacemos todo tipo de actividades relacionadas con él y con lo audiovisual en general. Nació de tres amigos que habíamos estudiado algo relacionado con el mundo audiovisual. Nos juntamos para crear una asociación cultural a través de la cual difundir el cortometraje para la gente de Guadalajara. A partir de ahí nos hemos ido diversificando hacia formación niños y mayores, producción de cortos y videos que nos encargan y los que creamos nosotros.

Un arranque de empresa situada en una pequeña ciudad de España y que dedica mucho tiempo a incentivar la cultura, actividades y comercio locales no suena como la típica empresa internacional. Sin embargo, por poner un ejemplo, siempre habéis subtitulado vuestros cortos y videos [Algo que a TranslatorsVillage nos encanta, por supuesto] ¿Por qué?

Pensamos que cualquier cosa que hagamos es tan aplicable aquí como en el extranjero, queríamos dar la posibilidad de que cualquier persona del mundo pudiera entender nuestro trabajo. Todos los miembros de Contrapicado hemos viajado bastante e incluso vivido fuera de España, así que tenemos amigos, conocidos y familia por todo el mundo, algo que seguro ha influido mucho en este aspecto. En principio lo hemos hecho solo en inglés por no subir un video por cada idioma de subtítulos, pero ahora hay muchas más facilidades para poner varios subtítulos de distintos idiomas en un mismo video, algo de lo que nos aprovecharemos pronto, sin duda.

¿Qué trabas habéis encontrado para hacer entender vuestras obras en otro idioma?  

Hemos tenido la suerte de contar con un profesional. Tenemos diálogos en general bastante coloquiales y no habríamos sabido traducir ciertas expresiones de no ser por esta persona.

Esto no es lo único que hacéis como acto de internacionalidad, también organizáis festivales internacionales, cuéntame.

Sí, sobre todo en el último año, nos propusieron traer a Guada un par de eventos que se hacen en todo el mundo. Nos pareció muy interesante que en una ciudad tan pequeña se pudiera ver algo que se está viendo a la vez en cualquier punto del mundo y en seguida nos unimos a la propuesta y hemos organizado tanto el festival de Future Shorts como El día más corto, y ambos se han hecho por distintas ciudades de España y del mundo

¿Qué tal funciona la comunicación con estos festivales (en otros idiomas)?

Se organizan desde otros países pero tienen representantes en cada país y en el caso de España caso no somos nosotros, así que hemos tenido la suerte de no tener que lidiar con el problema del idioma; nos han llegado todas las instrucciones ya en español.

Los miembros de TranslatorsVillage hemos asistido a vuestros festivales y sabemos que muchos de los cortometrajes llegan en VO. ¿Cuál es vuestra experiencia?

Sí, estas organizaciones hacen selección de cotos de todo el mundo de distintas formas de hacer cine y vienen subtitulados. Nos gusta mucho ver las versiones originales subtituladas; al ser cine alternativo y además cortometrajes y de países de lenguas minoritarias, de no ser por estos festivales sería dificilísimo encontrarlos subtitulados.

Al público le gusta porque sabe que viene a un evento internacional y es lo que espera (la VO).

¿Cual es vuestra visión de futuro?

Seguir creciendo, para poder traer más eventos novedosos y hacer intercambios con colectivos parecidos de otros países para difundir cortos y festivales. Queremos traducir la página a inglés y francés también.

TranslatorsVillage is sponsoring a new CIC in Leeds: Spanish Business Quarter.

Spanish Business Quarter is a CIC with HQ in Leeds, created to strengthen relationships between North England and Spanish speaking countries, facilitating the exchange of information and experiences between companies and individuals.

Associating TranslatorsVillage to this initiative will help to better understand the translations needs in this language combination. We are planning similar ventures in other languages and countries. If you are interested in hosting a similar initiative in your area, do not hesitate to contact us.

Collaboration with NPO

In this issue we are starting a volunteers section for translators that want to give some of their time and knowledge to help Non Profit Organizations. In this section you will find requests from organizations that need our help.

Today, we have the opportunity to collaborate with www.artistasdiversos.org ( diverse artists ). This project promotes social and professional inclusion of the disabled, through the arts.

We can contribute by translating core texts into different languages for disabled artists from different countries who are exhibiting their art on ArtistasDiversos platform.

They are currently looking for translators into Polish and Romanian.
